An HUD is a display indicator that displays the key flight information onto a transparent screen positioned in front of a pilot’s line of sight. HUD finds its applications in the automotive and aviation sectors. It helps increase the situational awareness and enhances safety margins in these sectors. The following are the primary components of an HUD: combiner, projector unit, display panel, and video generator.One trend in the market is emergence of DLE technology for HUDs. HUDs are becoming a fundamental part of almost all military programs, including those for military platforms like vehicles and aircraft and wearable gears for dismounted soldiers. The traditional HUD designs incorporate many heavy, degradable, and maintenance-intensive components that increase the complexities of military programs.
The defense budgets of various countries in APAC such as China and India, and the Middle East, are expected to rise because of an increase in military modernization programs, and the growing tension across borders and with other countries. For the period 2014-2015, India and China have announced their defense budgets of $38.35 billion and $132 billion, respectively. Both countries are planning to increase their defense forces. For instance, India is adopting military modernization programs to upgrade and repair its Cold War-era equipment and vehicles. India is also planning to invest $20 billion to buy approximately 130 Dassault Rafale fighter jets and new helicopters to strengthen the country’s air force. This will increase the fitment rate of HUDs in new aircraft, thus driving the growth of the market.
